SOUGHT UNDER SURVEILLANCE

Mort, An incompetent private detective pursues unpromising leads and dead ends, accompanied by a young man hoping to get his deposit back. They search the city for answers, finding only growing paranoia uniting the two. Shot on Sony PD150.

I’ve always been attracted to the private investigator archetype. The combination of disheveled and anayltical, socially detached but smarmy and a subjective, personal set of convictions. PIs are often the smartest and slowest persons in the room.

For my film I wanted to combine the bumbling, ineptitude of Columbo with the idealized overconfidence and grandstanding of Sherlock Holmes. The result is a mystery film with no answers and no real questions. While following red herrings and dead ends, in a time where intrigue is born out of the bright lights of a surveillance state, the real sleuth becomes the peripheral camera.
